Covid-19 Booster Vaccinations

The National Booking Service is now allowing eligible people to book their COVID-19 booster vaccine appointments in vaccine sites that are on the NBS.

Text messages and letters will start to be sent out to eligible people from the 20th September 2021 and throughout the week in a phased way.

As this will be phased, people will only be able to book once they are invited. For people that aren’t invited to book on NBS straight away, or where they haven’t been contacted and booked through another service, they will be contacted and able to book in the near future.

Please do not call the surgery to book your vaccination, this booster programme will be run nationally and not by the surgery, we will not be able to book you an appointment or let you know when to expect notification.

Veterans Mental Health & Wellbeing Service

With the events in Afghanistan over the past few days, there may be veterans that are finding this news overwhelming, particulary for those that have served in the country or have friends currently out there.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health or wellbeing, please reach out to a friend, to your GP or to the Veterans Mental Health & Wellbeing Service Op COURAGE

You can contact the service yourself or ask your GP, a charity or someone else, such as a family member or friend, to do this for you.

Covid Vaccinations – Walk-in Sessions.



An NHS COVID Pass shows your coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination details or test results. This is your COVID-19 status.
You may be asked to show your pass to travel abroad, or at events and venues in England asking for proof of your COVID-19 status.
Always check the entry requirements for the country or the venue you’re visiting.

Covid vaccination update for cohorts 10-12 (under 50 year olds)

The vaccination site will continue at North Devon Leisure Centre in Barnstaple, but the running of the site will be taken on by Northern Devon Healthcare Trust and bookings can be made through the National Booking Service – not the GP practice.

Subject to approval by NHS England and NHS Improvement, it is expected that the Leisure Centre will be available to book for 1st dose appointments on the National Booking Service for people in the eligible groups from early May.

For a period, the site will be shared with GP teams as they finish second doses to people in groups 1-9.

Andrea Bell, deputy chief nurse at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Our team has delivered over 16,000 vaccinations at our clinics for health and social care workers at North Devon District Hospital. Now that those clinics have come to an end, we’re delighted that we can move on to support vaccinating local people in cohorts 10-12, once eligible, at the Leisure Centre in Barnstaple. 

“Our vaccinators, admin team and volunteers are all looking forward to supporting the next stage of the vaccination programme so that our community in Northern Devon gets the best available protection from coronavirus.

“Once you are eligible for vaccination, please make your booking through the National Booking Service from early May. We look forward to seeing you.” 

A spokesperson for the 14 GP practices who have been running the vaccination centre at Barnstaple Leisure Centre said: “We have successfully vaccinated over 50,000 people and we are now focusing on the second doses for this group. We have been pleased to be involved with the national programme, vaccinating the highest risk patients, however we are now handing over the running of the vaccination programme for cohorts 10-12 (those aged 18-49 years old) and we are working with the hospital for a smooth transition.”

The National Booking Service currently offers appointments at Arnold’s Pharmacy in Westward Ho! and will soon show the Barnstaple Leisure Centre as well – if at first appts do not show for NorthDevon please keep trying as the system is updated regularly.

National Vaccination Hubs.

Some people in cohort 7 (aged 60-64) will start to receive invites from the national booking service over the next few days. These patients are being directed to the national booking website and will be able to book appointments for the national sites.

If you have received a letter from the national NHS booking system, please book an appointment through their website or by calling 119.  New appointments are regularly added to the system, so please keep checking back with the site if you need to. 

Please DO NOT contact us to book your appointment, we are currently vaccinating people aged 65 and over, or those aged 16-64 with underlying health conditions.  We aren’t yet vaccinating people under 65 without underlying health issues.

When we move to vaccinating this group, along with the other North Devon GP practices, we will contact you.

We hope you and your family are in good health.

Our community, like those all around the world, has been through a lot over recent months, and we all look forward to resuming our normal lives.

We want to give you an update on the service and availability here at the practice.  We have continued to operate during the pandemic, indeed we are busier than ever, but we have had to adapt to new restrictions.

We continue to ask that you do not attend the practice if you do not have a pre-booked appointment.  This is likely to be the way we manage things in the future becoming the “new normal” service.

Please do not visit the practice if you, or anyone you have been in contact with have any symptoms of coronavirus, no matter how mild.  Instead, Please visit, or call 111 for advice on testing, isolation & treatment.

If you would like an appointment or advice from a doctor or nurse or administrator, instead of telephoning us please click on ‘Contact your Doctors Online’. You can then fill out a short online form, known as an eConsult, which will enable us to decide how best to help you.  eConsult is also available on the NHS app.   You will normally get a response the same day, but always by the end of the next working day.  By consulting online you avoid the phone queue, you help protect staff and patients, and you enable us to prioritise the care of patients who need it most. Our phone lines are still open if you do need to call, and a member of our administration team will assist you to complete an eConsult.

If you need to contact us about a patient who is less than 6 months old, please continue to telephone the practice.

Our practice follows infection control guidance from our governing bodies, for the safety of our patients & staff.  So you may see some changes when you next visit the practice.

If you are asked to attend the practice:

  • Please wear a face mask when entering the practice.
  • Please use the hand sanitiser provided
  • Please do not bring unnecessary bags & coats
  • We no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.
  • If possible , please attend the practice alone
  • Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Please stay more than 2 metres away from our staff & other patients, except when with your clinician.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.

The Team At Caen Medical Centre

Advice on patients wearing face coverings when visiting the practice.

The Government has recently advised everyone to wear a face covering when out and about, therefore we are requesting that patients please wear a face covering before entering the surgery.

The surgery has a legal responsibility to protect staff and patients from risks associated with COVID-19; wearing a face covering is an added precaution that may have some benefit in reducing the likelihood that a person with the infection passes it on. Evidence shows a face covering can help in reducing the spread of droplets; it stops them from leaving the mouth and nose area and reduces the size of area in which they spread. All of our clinical team wear a face mask when consulting with patients, our admin team are shielded behind perspex screens and have all been provided with the choice of wearing a face mask or face shield if they wish.

A medical grade clinical mask is not necessary, these need to be prioritised to clinical staff. Instead, for patients who are visiting healthcare sites, a face covering is sufficient and there is guidance for people to make these at home with items they may already own.

Our clinics on the 23rd October, 6th, 7th November and 16th December are now full. We have a mop up clinic on the 7th December for the over 65s that still has spaces.

Screening of ALL patients before entering the premises and social distancing rules remain in place.

Covid Vaccinations Cohorts 1 – 9 Update!

We as a practice, along with all other North Devon practices, are no longer giving any first dose vaccines  and we are not involved in giving vaccines for Groups 10 and lower. This will be done via the National Booking Service. They will contact you directly. Booking for these groups can be done by calling 119.
